Changes without pressure

Entrepreneur's are excited about running their business, their title, their prestige, their toys, but a lot of them do not know how to keep the business healthy.

They work on the top number, and they think that the bottom number will take care of itself.  They normally will not hire a strong financial person for their business.  When the bottom number is red, they first blame their accountant and then their banker because of fees and interest expense.

The goal of any company is to make as much profit as it can.  The amount of profit a company makes shows how much their customers value their service or product.  Every Company wants Sam's, Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, Procter & Gamble and Federated for customers.  When the entrepreneur lands the "Big Fish", at minimal or no profit, they believe that since they are "in the door", they can move the pricing up, increase volume and make their fortune.  The opposite is the norm.  More resources are used to satisfy every want and desire of the big customer at any cost.  Service levels and concern for the smaller customer is pushed to the side.

Cutting costs is the hardest thing for an entrepreneur to do.  He/She thinks that they have become a failure because they have to reduce spending.  It cutting costs, nothing is sacred.  Company's that i worked for have terminated family members, turned leased vehicles back in, canceled lucrative bonus programs, sold the condo, quit the country club memberships, stopped buying luxury boxes and season sports tickets, liquidated the stock portfolio and took temporary pay cuts.

Spending money must become a difficult process.  The entrepreneur has to ask themselves one question.  Will I loose sales or profits if I do not spend this money.  If the answer is no, don't spend it.  There is no dollar amount to small to reduce or cut.  A $100 a week savings equals $26,000 in five years.

Spending is hard.  Dollars that leak out are never recovered.  How much are you spending on office supplies, transportation, overnight mail, copies, subscriptions, associations, trade shows, outside storage, salary vs. commission for your sales people.
